Johannesburg
Introduction
Johannesburg, or "Joburg/Jozi," is South Africa's largest city and economic hub, founded in 1886 following a gold rush. Known as the "City of Gold" (Egoli), this high-altitude, inland metropolis (approx. 2,000m above sea level) is a major commercial, mining, and financial center, often considered the engine room of the African continent. Known for its bustling, energetic atmosphere, street art, shopping (Sandton City), and thriving arts scene in neighborhoods like Maboneng and Rosebank. The City serves as the main hub for travelers flying into O.R. Tambo International Airport, often used as a stopover before visiting Kruger National Park or Pilanesberg National Park.
